Faith Formation

“We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” Colossians 1:10

Faith Formation is the cornerstone of our community at St. John the Baptist. In fact, it is part of our mission:

“St. John the Baptist Catholic Community shares the mission to evangelize so that those who do not believe in Jesus may hear the call to faith, and those who do believe may grow in faith.”

What is RCIA?

Parishes welcome new members into the Catholic Church through a process of prayer, conversion, education, faith sharing, and rituals known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This process includes several stages marked by prayer, study, and discussion.  The focus is one a person’s relationship with God in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit.

Who is welcome at RCIA?

All people who are open to discerning their personal experience of faith and to learning more about the Catholic Church are welcome to begin the RCIA process.  All that is truly required is a sincere desire to learn, to grow, and to develop one’s relationship with God.

The RCIA is a process, in particular, for those who:

■ have not been baptized,

■ have been baptized in another faith tradition and would like to join the Catholic Church,

■ are baptized Catholics who have not received the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and/or Confirmation.

How long is RCIA?

There is no time frame: the person who desires to enter the Church is on a spiritual journey.  It is about conversion to Christ and a life centered in the God of Jesus Christ.  That could mean that one person is ready to commit to Christ in a year while another needs two, three, or more years to be fully open to that commitment.  The process is tailored to the individual and her or his journey of faith.

For more information about the RCIA program call the Parish Office, 301-622-1122, or email LJ Milone, the Director of Faith Formation, at
